Privacy Statement

The Tenant Power Toolkit is a collaborative effort between The Debt Collective, The LA Tenants Union, The Anti-Eviction Mapping Project, and anti-eviction lawyers. When using our tools, we will ask for some information about your eviction and rent debt situation. If you are using these tools to file an Answer to your eviction with the court, we will use the information you give us to create the documents to file in order to contest your eviction. If you live in Los Angeles County and qualify for a fee waiver, we will use your data to file those documents with the court, and to follow up if those documents get rejected by the court.

If the court rejects your legal paperwork, we will also share your file with volunteers who have agreed to help tenants with rejected cases. We will keep a copy of your data so it is available to anyone you authorize to help fight your case. At any time, you may request that we delete your file and data by emailing tenantpower@debtcollective.org

Additionally, if you opt in, we will share information about your case with our ally tenant organizations, legal aid organizations, and anti-eviction researchers. We will use this information to connect you with legal aid and tenant organizers and to organize tenants, for example, to: connect tenants who share the same landlord so that they can organize, find super-evictor-landlords and slumlords, negotiate repairs, fight for rent cancellation, and identify winnable large legal cases against landlords.

Your data will be stored in a secure and encrypted database on a Debt Collective server. We will not share your data without your consent. Though we will protect your confidential information, you are not consulting with an attorney or getting legal advice from an attorney by using this Tool. Our team is not representing you in your case. If you want to speak with an attorney for the purpose of obtaining legal representation, click here.

Data Sharing Policy

We built this Tool to stop evictions everywhere and to build the collective power of tenants. The information we collect from this Tool can help us with that mission, and we want to support others doing the same work. But, we only use information with the affirmative consent of tenants, and we only share information with allies who share our power-building mission and data sovereignty orientation.

Tiered Data Sharing Guidelines:

  • Tenant organizers who fit our core mission of building power and have established track records can receive identified data if and only if tenants have given their consent.
  • Legal service providers who fit our core mission of building power and have established track records can receive identified data if and only if tenants have given their consent.
  • Researchers must make a data request and, if accepted, will receive de-identified aggregate data or relevant reports.
  • For everyone, please fill out a data request form with as much detail as possible and we will get back to you.

Maintaining the privacy of tenants - especially tenants organizing to build power - is central to our mission. If we grant your sharing request, you may not share the data beyond the terms of our agreement. Because data leaks can be damaging to tenants, we will hold you accountable to the initial terms of the data sharing agreement including no further circulation.
